This is the most elaborate carving in the collection, a sweeping paisley and floral scroll panel that fills nearly the entire face of the block, bordered by a fine dotted trim. The openwork is deep and continuous, curling stems and leaf forms cut cleanly through the wood, creating a dramatic play of light and shadow that shifts as you turn the piece.
A design this dense and interconnected would have taken an experienced artisan considerably longer to carve than simpler repeating motifs, every curve had to be planned in advance to keep the surrounding wood structurally intact. That it has survived decades of active printing use without breaking is a genuine testament to both the skill involved and the quality of the timber.
