Overview
This Vahanvati Mata painting shows the goddess seated on her lion top a swan-shaped boat, sailing over a blue sea filled with fish. Drawn in the Mata ni Pachedi folk-art style, it tells a devotional story in fine black linework against a maroon and red ground.
Vahanvati Maa, also known as Sikotar Mata, is revered by coastal communities, seafarers and traders as a protector of ships from storms. Around her, the composition carries other forms of the Mother Goddess, celestial musicians and devotees at prayer, the layered storytelling the Vaghari tradition is known for.
