Overview
This Bahuchara Mata painting shows the multi-armed goddess seated on her rooster beneath a vast, leaf-filled tree, drawn in the Mata ni Pachedi style. Dense black linework on a brown ground, a maroon border and an artist's signature give it a handcrafted character.
Bahuchara Mata is worshipped as a goddess of fertility and childhood, and devotees believe she blesses couples seeking children and protects infants. Her rooster is tied to awakening and light, and to restraint and innocence. Her main seat in Gujarat is the Bahucharaji Temple in Mehsana.
